These are similar to the clay pots we made in pottery class in High School. They are a clay mixture that is fired at high temperature in a kiln, shaped, then coated to look like a natural stone or a design. They are available in an abundant number of colors and designs. Due to the specifics of the materials used to make them, they are water absorbent and more brittle than their ceramic counterparts. These are not recommended for outside use in areas with temperature ranges from hot to freezing.
Because they can absorb water which can freeze and cause the tile to crack or split. Something as basic as water absorption can mean the difference between a great project outcome or a failure.
